India Challenges NYT’s ‘Pakistani Kashmir’ Terminology Over Election Violence

The Indian Embassy in the United States has taken a strong stance against a New York Times story that referred to Pakistan‑occupied Kashmir as “Pakistani Kashmir.” Posting on the social media platform X, the embassy labeled the headline as “misleading” and reiterated that the region is under illegal Pakistani occupation, remaining an integral portion of India’s Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.

The piece, which reported “Clashes erupt in Pakistani Kashmir as voting begins,” coincides with a turbulent election cycle in the occupied area. Authorities report that the voting process has been plagued by accusations of vote‑rigging, disappearances, and violent confrontations.

According to intelligence bureau sources, the flare‑ups were not spontaneous. They allege that members of the Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist group were directed to blend into protest crowds, provoke violence, and then withdraw, creating a false narrative that protestors were the aggressors. This alleged strategy gave security agencies justification to employ force against civilians.

Despite repeated calls from the Joint Action Awami Committee (JAAC) for peace and order, the region has witnessed multiple violent incidents, leaving at least 37 dead and about 200 wounded in the last three days.
