India-Canada Trade Negotiations Gain Momentum as PM Modi Plans Ottawa Visit

Bilateral trade talks between India and Canada have entered a decisive phase as both governments push to complete a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) before year‑end. The momentum was reinforced on 13 October when Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand arrived in New Delhi for a three‑day visit.

During her stay, Anand will meet Indian Foreign Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar and State Minister for Skill Development Jayant Chaudhary. The meetings, scheduled for 14 October at the ITC Maurya Hotel and the Skill Development Building respectively, are expected to focus on removing tariff barriers, expanding services trade, and enhancing cooperation in skill development.

Trade data from 2025 shows bilateral commerce stood at $30.4 billion, with Canada exporting C$11 billion worth of goods to India and importing C$9.7 billion from India. Key export items from Canada include minerals, fuels, and timber, while Indian exports feature vegetables and other agricultural products.

The diplomatic push aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s planned official trip to Ottawa in December 2026. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has publicly expressed enthusiasm about hosting Modi and highlighted the shared goal of concluding the CEPA by the end of the year.

Anand’s visit, her third to India since taking office in 2025, underscores the strategic importance both nations attach to deepening economic ties and expanding collaboration across sectors such as technology, education, and entrepreneurship.
