Trade Between India and Benin Crosses $1.3 Billion, Leaders Celebrate

New Delhi, August 1 – The National Day of Benin provided a platform for India’s Economic Relations Secretary, Sudhakar Dherela, to celebrate a milestone in Indo‑Beninese commerce. He announced that bilateral trade has now surpassed US$1.3 billion, signalling robust economic engagement.

India’s export basket to Benin features rice, pharmaceutical products, heavy machinery and automobiles, whereas Benin supplies India with cashew kernels and cotton fibers. Both sides view this trade mix as a foundation for further diversification.

Dherela stressed that the partnership is built on democratic ideals and secular principles, and that expanding cooperation in investment, capacity building and development projects remains a priority.

He also extended heartfelt congratulations to the Beninese government and citizens on their national day and reiterated India’s support for Benin’s stance on India’s bid for a permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council.

Diplomatic relations are coordinated through the Indian High Commission in Nigeria and the Benin Embassy in New Delhi. The Indian community in Benin, estimated at about 1,500 individuals, contributes to trade, education and cultural life, with an Indian cultural association and a Hindu temple active in Cotonou.
