India‑Bangladesh Ties Need Cooperation, Expert Highlights

Professor Swarn Singh stressed that India and Bangladesh have no viable alternative to improving their strategic coordination. The two nations share a 4,000‑kilometre land border, and cooperation is crucial for regional development.

He recalled that during Sheikh Hasina's fifteen‑year rule, bilateral relations were strong, with frequent personal interactions between the leaders. The current climate, however, is complicated by Bangladesh's historic tilt towards China under the Nationalist Citizens' Party.

Key issues such as the Teesta water sharing dispute remain unresolved, while the 1990 Ganges water treaty is approaching its 30‑year milestone. Singh urged that both governments reopen talks on these matters to sustain mutual growth.
