India and Azerbaijan Set for Renewed Diplomatic Engagement

India and Azerbaijan are moving to deepen their diplomatic engagement, with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar scheduled to visit Azerbaijan on October 23. The official visit will provide an opportunity to review the full range of bilateral relations.

Jaishankar is expected to hold talks with his Azerbaijani counterpart during the visit. The meeting will focus on assessing progress made in recent years and considering new areas where the two countries can work together.

The announcement comes in the wake of a notable diplomatic step. On October 16, Indian Ambassador Abhay Kumar presented his credentials to President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan. Kumar used the occasion to convey India's commitment to strengthening its partnership with Azerbaijan.

The Indian Embassy in Azerbaijan said on X that the ambassador had pledged to expand bilateral ties and promote greater cooperation. The embassy added that Kumar would spare no effort in deepening friendship and mutual understanding between the people of the two nations.

The embassy also highlighted that India and Azerbaijan share historical and cultural links dating back centuries. These ties, developed over thousands of years, continue to serve as a strong basis for the relationship. Both sides acknowledged this legacy and explored possibilities for enhanced cooperation across areas of shared interest.

The discussions further referred to the talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Aliyev in Bishkek. Kumar and Aliyev reiterated their commitment to advancing bilateral cooperation and strengthening ties.

According to a statement from the Indian Embassy, the two sides emphasised building on their existing foundation of friendship, history and goodwill. They also stressed the importance of identifying new avenues for cooperation and bringing the countries closer.

Last week, Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh travelled to Azerbaijan. He took part in the seventh summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA), held in Baku.

Speaking at the plenary session on October 15, Singh focused on India's Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam vision, which regards the world as one family. He called for shared efforts to promote peace, cooperation and friendship, and urged member states to unite against cross-border terrorism.

With these recent exchanges at the ministerial and ambassadorial levels, the upcoming visit by Jaishankar is set to reinforce the momentum in India-Azerbaijan relations.
