Independence Day Ceremony Aboard INS Sudarshani in Portugal

Lisbon, 17 August – On 15 August, INS Sudarshani celebrated India’s 80th Independence Day while anchored in Ponta Delgada, Portugal. The ship’s decks were adorned with national flags and banners, and a formal colours ceremony was conducted by senior Indian naval officers.

The event was attended by Portuguese naval representatives, local diplomats and members of the Indian diaspora, reinforcing the symbolic significance of shared maritime heritage.

Prime Minister‑level officials from both nations praised the occasion as a testament to the enduring friendship that dates back to historic voyages across the Indian Ocean. The celebration also highlighted the role of sail training ships in fostering diplomatic outreach.

Following the ceremony, the vessel resumed its itinerary, heading toward Lisbon for a planned joint exercise with NRP Sagres, further solidifying India‑Portugal naval cooperation.
