Impact of Hasina’s Virtual Address on India-Bangladesh Ties Assessed

Analysts are examining whether Sheikh Hasina’s virtual speech on August 5 could affect the diplomatic rapport between India and Bangladesh. Former High Commissioner Vina Sikri argued that the address is purely ceremonial and does not constitute a political maneuver. She highlighted that Hasina has been sentenced to death in absentia by a Bangladeshi court, a verdict she has not been able to contest. Sikri suggested that Hasina’s return would allow her to appeal the sentence and that India should permit her safe passage. The diplomat stressed that Hasina is a guest in India, enjoys full freedom of expression, and is not involved in any political activity on Indian soil. Sikri also mentioned that earlier concerns about the Indian High Commissioner’s role have been resolved, reaffirming both governments’ commitment to normalising ties.
