IMF Highlights Robust Domestic Demand Behind India's Accelerated Outlook

The International Monetary Fund emphasized that India’s upgraded growth projection stems chiefly from strong internal demand. In its October 2026 outlook, the IMF lifted the FY2027 growth estimate to 7 percent, matching the FY2028 forecast.

Even as oil prices stay elevated, Indian consumption and service‑sector performance have offset external pressures. The Fund expects consumer‑price inflation to stay around 5 percent in 2026 before easing to 4.4 percent the following year.

Fiscal metrics also appear more resilient. The IMF noted that India’s current‑account deficit should fall to 1.5 percent of GDP in 2026 and further to 1.3 percent in 2027, compared with 0.7 percent in 2025.

The agency warned that prolonged conflict in the Middle East could keep global energy and food prices high, but affirmed that India’s demographic dividend and reform agenda will keep it at the forefront of global growth.
