IAF participates in largest Southern Hemisphere air exercise with four Rafales

From 20 July to 7 August, the Indian Air Force will operate four Rafale fighters as part of Pitch Black 2026 in the remote outback of northern Australia. The deployment includes nearly a hundred Indian air personnel covering pilots, ground crew, avionics specialists and air‑battle controllers.

Supporting the Rafales are two C‑17 Globemaster‑III transport aircraft and an IL‑78 tanker for in‑flight refuelling, enabling sustained air operations over vast distances. The Indian team will engage in air‑to‑air dogfights, precision strike missions and coordinated joint exercises with forces from Europe, North America and the Asia‑Pacific.

The Ministry of Defence emphasized that the drill’s “large‑scale, low‑density environment” challenges participants to operate under austere conditions while maintaining high readiness. Lessons learned will feed back into India’s own operational doctrine, enhancing the IAF’s ability to conduct high‑intensity, multinational missions.

India has previously taken part in Pitch Black in 2018, 2022 and 2024, each iteration strengthening bilateral ties and contributing to a stable security architecture across the Indo‑Pacific.
