Test of hypersonic missile system over East Sea demonstrates rapid re‑targeting

The missile exercise on Saturday was part of training for units that operate the so‑called hypersonic strategic weapons system. Analysts suggest the launch could have involved the Hwasong‑16Na medium‑range hypersonic ballistic missile, which is capable of changing trajectory at low altitude. North Korean media reported that the missile flew at a reduced altitude and altered its path mid‑flight, showcasing advanced maneuverability. South Korean forces later confirmed that a ballistic missile had been launched from the Wonsan area, covering more than 700 kilometres before descending into the East Sea.
