International Human Rights Group Condemns ICT Proceedings as Politically Driven

An internationally recognised human‑rights organization has issued a strong rebuke of Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal after it formally accepted charges against eight individuals connected to the July 2024 protests. The group described the investigation as “politically motivated and biased,” stating that the process fails to meet the minimum standards of independence, impartiality, and objectivity expected of courts handling war‑crimes cases.

According to the organization, the allegations against scholar Jafar Iqbal, former university officials, and former student‑league leaders appear to target dissent rather than evidence of criminal conduct. They warned that conflating political opposition with crimes against humanity undermines the principles of international law and threatens the accountability mechanisms meant to address genuine atrocities.

The statement called on the United Nations Human Rights Council, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and regional bodies such as the European Union to scrutinise the proceedings and ensure that any trial adheres to transparent, fair‑play standards. The watchdog also urged Bangladesh to protect academic freedom, emphasizing that prosecuting educators without solid, verifiable proof of intent is a grave violation of scholarly independence.

The organization’s appeal highlights broader concerns about the use of the war‑crimes framework to suppress opposition voices, a practice that could set a dangerous precedent for other jurisdictions seeking to leverage international law for political ends.
