Human Rights Concerns Rise as China Enforces Cultural Integration in Tibet

Human‑rights observers have expressed alarm over the implementation of China’s Ethnic Unity and Progress Law in the Tibet Autonomous Region. The statute legally sanctions measures that aim to dilute Tibetan cultural distinctiveness, including compulsory Mandarin language training for teachers, restrictions on the public display of traditional Tibetan symbols, and increased surveillance of religious institutions.

Critics argue that the law violates multiple articles of the Chinese Constitution that guarantee ethnic autonomy and the right to preserve cultural heritage. It also runs counter to international commitments such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to which China is a signatory.

The International Campaign for Tibet has launched a global advocacy campaign, urging United Nations bodies, foreign governments, and interfaith leaders to condemn the law and call for its repeal. The organization claims that without external pressure, Beijing will continue to push policies that systematically erase the Tibetan identity.
