Recent Houthi attacks on Saudi airports raise regional tensions
October 2026 has seen a sharp escalation in Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia’s aviation infrastructure. On Oct 10, a coordinated drone and missile strike on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh killed 12 people and injured more than 300. A second attack 24 hours later caused additional fatalities and injuries, prompting the temporary shutdown of the airport.
The coalition’s military wing has condemned the attacks, accusing the Houthis of violating international law, while the rebels claim the strikes are retaliation for Saudi operations in Yemen. Several countries have issued travel warnings for Saudi Arabia and urged their citizens to avoid air travel in the region.
Security analysts warn that if the pattern continues, the risk of further incidents near holy sites and major cities could rise, potentially drawing additional regional powers into the conflict.
