A newly constructed section of the Hongqi Bridge in China’s Sichuan province catastrophically collapsed into a river following a significant landslide on Tuesday. Shocking video footage emerged, capturing the dramatic moment the mountainside gave way, taking a portion of the bridge with it. Fortunately, officials have confirmed that no lives were lost in the incident. An immediate investigation has been launched to ascertain the precise cause of this infrastructure failure.
The Hongqi Bridge, a vital part of a national highway linking central China to Tibet, experienced its downfall on Tuesday afternoon. Social media platforms were flooded with harrowing videos showing the bridge’s concrete supports buckling and then failing, causing a substantial segment to plummet into the water below. The collapse generated a massive plume of dust and debris as earth and rocks from the unstable slope inundated the bridge’s base. Experts are examining whether geological instability, a known issue in the region with a history of landslides, was the sole or primary factor. The Sichuan Road & Bridge Group, responsible for its construction, built the bridge as a crucial transportation artery.
