From 1982 Inaugural Observance to 2026 Theme ‘Invest in Peace’

When the first Peace Day was observed in 1982, the United Nations headquarters rang a bell gifted by Japan in 1954. The bell, forged from melted coins and medals of children who died in the war, symbolised a commitment to remembrance and hope. Since then, the UN announces a specific theme for each year – ranging from peace for sustainable development to peace against climate change and racism. In 2026 the theme is “Invest in Peace: for all, everywhere, every day,” emphasizing that peace is a daily, collective investment rather than a static absence of war.
