President Herzog Highlights Historic India‑Israel Ties in Letter to Pilot

President Isaac Herzog’s letter to Captain Smita Machhar not only lauded her heroic landing of Flight Dubai on September 30, 2026, but also placed her bravery within the broader context of India‑Israel relations. Herzog recalled the Indian soldiers who fought for the liberation of the Holy Land more than a century ago, linking their legacy to the modern-day courage displayed by Captain Machhar.

He wrote that her actions place her among the distinguished line of Indian servicemen who risked their lives for the freedom of historic cities in the region. Herzog affirmed that Captain Machhar will now be an enduring part of the shared history that binds the Republic of India and the State of Israel.

The president also reiterated his plan to award her the President’s Award for civilian heroism at an upcoming ceremony, following her full recovery. He expressed confidence that the United Arab Emirates, a close partner of both nations, will continue to provide excellent care during her convalescence.

Herzog’s message concluded with prayers for her speedy healing and a warm invitation to Jerusalem, where he hopes to personally thank her and celebrate the deepening ties between the two peoples.
