Hemant Majumdar Warns Against Over‑Reliance on China Amid Diplomatic Visits

Pune, September 12 – While Russia’s engine proposal dominates headlines, retired Brigadier Hemant Majumdar cautioned policymakers against placing too much trust in Beijing after President Xi Jinping’s recent visit to New Delhi.

Majumdar noted that the Chinese leader’s trip, the first in many years, may create the impression of thawing relations, but deep‑seated issues remain. The primary obstacle is the long‑standing border dispute, where China pursues a "slicing" strategy, incrementally claiming territory along the Line of Actual Control.

Economic imbalances also trouble the partnership. Over the past seven to eight years, India’s imports from China have crossed the $100 billion mark, whereas exports to Beijing linger around $20 billion. The trade gap fuels concerns that China remains a one‑sided beneficiary of the relationship.

Majumdar highlighted a growing "supply‑chain warfare" approach from Beijing, which restricts Indian access to critical raw materials such as rare‑earth elements, fertilizers, and precision‑machinery components. Restrictions on electronic parts and visa hurdles for Indian businesspeople further strain commercial ties.

Finally, the analyst pointed out China’s steadfast support for Pakistan and its consistent opposition to India in multilateral forums, including the United Nations Security Council. Until Beijing adjusts its stance, offers a level playing field in trade, and respects India’s territorial integrity, Majumdar argues that a cautious and measured engagement is the only prudent path forward.
