Heavy Rains Trigger Disease Outbreak in Philippines Capital

Intense monsoon rains have unleashed a public‑health emergency in Manila, where leptospirosis cases have climbed to 50, resulting in two deaths. The National Referral Center for Infectious Diseases at San Lazaro Hospital responded by creating an express treatment lane for affected patients.

The Department of Health reports a total of 3,760 confirmed cases nationwide, with expectations of further increases as flood conditions persist. In the Ilocos region, ten fatalities have been attributed to the disease over the past eight months, doubling the death toll recorded for the same timeframe in 2025.

Local officials have urged anyone who believes they may have been exposed to seek prophylactic antibiotics without delay. A total of 88 cities and municipalities have declared a disaster state due to the combined impact of the southwest monsoon and tropical cyclones. Central Luzon’s Pampanga, Batangas, and Bulacan provinces are among the most severely affected, with Pampanga reporting agricultural losses of approximately 1.4 billion pesos and impacting close to one million residents.
