Heavy Downpours Elevate Flood and Landslide Risks in Southern Kyushu

Southern Kyushu faces a surge in flood and landslide danger after a series of heavy rains that began on Saturday. The Japan Meteorological Agency has placed Yakushima Island under a Level‑5 landslide warning, the most serious alert level.

Rainfall totals in the Onoaida district reached 490.5 mm in 24 hours, a historic figure for the area. The excess water is swelling rivers, prompting officials to warn of possible breaching and downstream flooding.

The weather pattern stems from Typhoon Krovanh combined with a secondary system, which together are expected to deliver up to 200 mm of rain across the region by early Sunday.

Residents are advised to keep a close eye on official updates, avoid low‑lying zones, and prepare evacuation plans. Roughly 20 homes lost electricity Saturday morning, though no significant structural damage has been reported so far.
