Heatwave Mortality Surge in Europe Hits 35,000, Experts Warn Climate Risks

Europe is confronting a deadly summer as four consecutive heatwaves have driven excess mortality to an estimated 35,000 deaths. The tally, drawn from early national reports, is likely to increase once August data are fully compiled.

Germany’s Robert Koch Institute alone attributes about 14,000 deaths to the heat between April and August, marking the nation’s highest summer death count on record. A single week in late June (22‑28) accounted for nearly 9,600 of those fatalities.

In Spain, the Carlos III Health Institute’s mortality monitoring system estimates 4,947 heat‑related deaths from May through August, surpassing the previous peak of 4,520 in 2022. France reported roughly 7,300 additional deaths by the end of July, while Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland and Switzerland each logged between 900 and 1,200 extra deaths during their heat episodes.

Since May, temperature extremes have repeatedly broken historic benchmarks. Germany experienced three back‑to‑back days of temperatures above 40 °C at the end of June across 46 stations, while many Spanish locales saw readings over 42 °C.

Experts emphasize that heat‑related mortality extends beyond obvious heatstroke. Elevated temperatures exacerbate chronic heart and lung conditions, often leading to deaths that are not directly recorded as heat‑related. The World Health Organization warned in May that Europe’s heat‑related death rate has risen by more than 30 % over the last two decades, a trajectory likely to accelerate with ongoing climate change and an increasingly elderly population.
