Investigation points to passenger list errors and crew drug use in Guyana ferry disaster

Preliminary findings from the Guyanese investigation into the fatal ferry accident suggest that the passenger list was significantly inaccurate, with 46 extra people boarded without proper documentation. Video from the boarding area later confirmed that the total number of occupants was 179, not the 133 initially reported.

In addition, police have confirmed that the ferry's captain and at least one crew member tested positive for cannabis, raising questions about compliance with safety regulations. Both individuals are now under police custody while the broader inquiry examines operational lapses, crew training, and regulatory oversight.
