From Gujarat to the Skies: Smita Machhar’s Courage Recognized by Leaders
Captain Smita Machhar, a native of Gujarat, became the focus of national attention after she neutralised an armed assailant on FlyDubai flight FZ1073. The flight, travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv, was interrupted when a passenger produced a knife and attempted to harm the crew.
Suffering serious cuts herself, Machhar restrained the attacker and steered the aircraft to a secure touchdown at Ben Gurion Airport, saving 174 lives.
Chief Minister Bhupendrabhai Patel posted on X, stating that the pilot’s bravery exemplifies the “true spirit of Gujarat” coursing through her veins. He praised her for averting a “major tragedy” and expressed confidence that the nation would stand with her during recovery.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also highlighted the incident, labeling Machhar a “hero” whose daring actions protected hundreds of civilians. Both leaders extended wishes for her quick healing and applauded her as a source of pride for the entire nation.
