‘Ganga‑Mahakam Vision’ Aims to Link Civilisations, Trade and Security Between New Delhi and Jakarta

Jakarta, 7 July – Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Indonesia’s legislative assembly, introducing the ‘Ganga‑Mahakam Vision’ as a roadmap for the two countries’ future. The vision seeks to bind the Indian Ganges and Indonesian Mahakam river basins as symbols of a broader civilizational partnership.

Modi outlined how the partnership would rest on shared democratic foundations, a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, and a concerted effort to amplify the Global South’s perspective on the world stage. He referenced India’s ‘Developed India 2047’ plan and Indonesia’s ‘Golden Indonesia 2045’ blueprint as complementary milestones for mutual growth.

The Prime Minister urged expansion of collaboration in areas such as trade, investment, connectivity, food and energy security, digital public infrastructure and emerging technologies. He thanked President Prabowo Subianto for bestowing the Bintang Adi Putra honour, describing it as a testament to the deep cultural and political ties.

A memorable line from his speech highlighted the metaphorical sea bridge: while the capitals are separated by thousands of kilometres, the maritime distance shrinks to merely 150 kilometres, turning the ocean into a conduit for shared destiny.

Modi later shared excerpts of his address on X, emphasizing that India and Indonesia will continue to build on their historic friendship, collaborative development and joint prosperity.
