G20 Foreign Ministers Meet in Atlanta; Argentina Showcases Resources

Atlanta, October 31: Argentina used the G20 foreign ministers' gathering in Atlanta to highlight its potential as a supplier of energy, food and critical minerals to Western economies. Ministers used the meeting to examine ways to shield supply chains from geopolitical shocks.

In a post on X on Friday, Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno described Argentina as a nation that, under President Javier Milei, has resolved to regain its place as a wealthy and strong country.

Quirno said the country aims to grow wealthy by tapping resources that had gone underused for decades. He said it also seeks greater strength, which he described as essential for protecting its own nation and the Western world.

He argued that the free world needs trustworthy providers of energy, food and critical minerals capable of guaranteeing supply amid geopolitical uncertainty and dangers to key trade routes. Argentina, he said, is determined to become one of those providers.

Quirno further tied the message to artificial intelligence, writing that super-intelligence and centres of energy and mineral production reinforce one another. He suggested this could fuel a sharp rise in the data centre industry.

Through its natural advantages in energy and climate and its plan to simplify regulations, Argentina wants to play a major part in this technological race, he said.

The approach echoed the agenda of the United States, which hosted the meeting. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said he had told ministers that maritime security and food security are the foundations of economic security. A US State Department media note from October 26 cited navigation freedom, energy and food security, and supply chain threats as central topics.

Critical minerals were also a key theme in bilateral meetings. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, after talks with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, posted on X that Germany and Australia are close friends and partners, linked by issues from European and Indo-Pacific security to critical minerals. He said the EU-Australia free trade agreement would deepen trade relations.

Under Milei's leadership, Argentina has been one of the closest partners of the Trump administration in Latin America.

Quirno did not say whether Argentina had signed any new supply deal in Atlanta.
