Vaccination of frontline workers expands as Ebola fight continues in DRC
On the same day, the WHO reported that the first 100 frontline health workers in Haut‑Uélé province received the Ervebo vaccine under a South Carolina‑led immunisation programme. Ervebo, proven effective against the Ebola Zaire strain, is also being studied for its impact on the current Bundibugyo virus disease outbreak.
To date, more than 9,000 frontline staff across the country have been vaccinated with Ervebo. In partnership with MSF, at least 870 additional health workers have received the vaccine as part of the "BRAVO" study, which evaluates the vaccine’s ability to prevent severe disease and death.
The WHO is also preparing a vaccine efficacy platform trial that will compare Ervebo with a Bundibugyo‑specific candidate, with results expected in the coming weeks.
