Four Indians Dead, One Critical After Missile Hits MV Golden Leo

A Russian missile strike on the commercial vessel MV Golden Leo, which left the Ukrainian port of Odessa on July 19, has claimed the lives of four Indian crew members and left a fifth Indian sailor gravely injured.

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs confirmed that the ship was carrying a total crew of 17, including five Indians. The ministry’s spokesperson condemned the attack, emphasizing that targeting civilian maritime traffic violates international norms and endangers innocent lives.

According to Ukrainian sources, the missile impact ignited a fire on the starboard side of the ship, prompting the evacuation of eight crew members who were rushed to a local hospital. The injured Indian crew member is currently under intensive medical care.

Russia’s defence ministry said its forces used a combination of Oniks anti‑ship missiles, air‑launched cruise missiles, and loitering munitions, aiming at what it described as vessels supporting Ukraine’s armed forces. It also alleged that two other cargo ships anchored near the port were carrying military cargo.

In response, India has summoned the Russian diplomatic mission in New Delhi to register its protest and to seek assurances that Indian nationals will be protected in future maritime operations.
