Washington, Aug. 22 — Aisha Wahab’s ascent from a foster‑care home to the United States Capitol marks one of the most inspiring political stories of the year. The California State Senator clinched the special election for the 14th congressional district, becoming the first Afghan‑American to win a seat in the House of Representatives.

Wahab, whose parents fled Afghanistan, lost both parents early in life. She and her sister were placed in foster care before being adopted by an Afghan couple in the Bay Area. Her entry into public service began with a 2018 victory on the Hayward City Council, followed by a 2022 win in the state senate.

The special election was triggered by Rep. Eric Swalwell’s resignation after sexual‑misconduct allegations surfaced, leaving a vacancy that required a runoff. Wahab faced Melissa Hernandez, a moderate Democrat backed by a Super‑PAC linked to the Israel Public Affairs Committee that spent heavily in the final weeks.
