Former President Yoon Sentenced Over Drone Strike and Martial Law Plot, Appeals Pending

South Korea's judiciary is confronting a series of convictions against former President Yoon Suk‑yeol, covering both a controversial drone operation and a broader martial‑law conspiracy. In June, the Seoul Central District Court sentenced Yoon to 30 years in prison for approving a 2024 drone campaign that sent unmanned aircraft toward the North Korean border.

The prosecution argued that the drone mission was designed to raise tensions and create a pretext for the December 3, 2024, martial‑law proclamation. Yoon was also found guilty of abusing his office and aiding the enemy by authorising the operation without proper oversight.

Separately, an appellate court in April affirmed a seven‑year sentence for Yoon's alleged obstruction of justice, after he purportedly ordered his security team to thwart an arrest warrant in January 2025 and excluded key cabinet members from a martial‑law briefing. The earlier lower‑court sentence of five years was increased by two years, though prosecutors had pursued a ten‑year term.

Both cases are now before the Supreme Court, which will hear arguments next Thursday at 2 p.m. The court's decision will determine whether Yoon's multiple convictions stand, potentially shaping the legal landscape for future leaders who might seek to manipulate security policy for political ends.

Yoon's defence maintains that the drone operation was a legitimate defensive action in response to North Korean garbage‑balloon provocations. Judges, however, ruled that the operation exposed sensitive military assets, harmed national security interests, and ultimately strengthened North Korean preparedness.
