Foreign Ministry Highlights Risks of Enlisting in Russian Forces for Economic Gain

In a statement released on September 30, the Ministry of External Affairs warned that the allure of quick financial rewards should not tempt Indian citizens into joining the Russian armed forces. The ministry cited several incidents where aspirants surrendered their Indian passport and sought Russian citizenship in order to secure a spot in the military.

These actions, driven by short‑term monetary greed, have been classified as dangerous and illegal. The government maintains continuous diplomatic contact with Moscow to secure the safety, welfare, and prompt release of any Indian national currently serving in Russian uniform. Officials emphasize that any attempt to acquire a Russian passport for military service bypasses legal channels and exposes the individual to severe repercussions.
