Foreign Minister Jaishankar Highlights Unity Despite Geopolitical Tensions

New Delhi, 14 September – In remarks following the BRICS summit, Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar said the gathering proved that India can convene a diverse group of nations and extract consensus even when underlying geopolitical tensions run deep. The summit attracted 32 delegations: all 11 BRICS members, ten partner nations, four regional organisations and seven international agencies.

Key participants included Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Iran’s President, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, the UAE Crown Prince and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al‑Sisi. The forum succeeded in agreeing on a common approach to the West Asia‑Middle East conflict, urging peace, security and enduring stability.

Members called for uninterrupted global trade, resilient supply chains, continuous energy flow and protection of civilian populations and infrastructure. Jaishankar noted that the summit’s atmosphere encouraged open and informal talks, bringing together leaders who might otherwise never meet.

The comprehensive agenda focused on economic development, technological cooperation and boosting the Global South’s representation. On terrorism, the group unanimously condemned all variants, including cross‑border terrorism, and specifically denounced the 22 April 2025 Pahalgam attack, insisting on zero tolerance and rejecting any double‑standard responses. The minister also highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s message of “dialogue, diplomacy and development,” which earned global applause, and affirmed that despite earlier doubts, the summit was a triumph under Modi’s direction.
