FlyDubai Flight FZ 1073 Crisis Averted by Veteran Indian Captain’s Quick Action
Dubai, October 9 – On September 30, FlyDubai flight FZ 1073 experienced an unprecedented inside attack when a co‑pilot assaulted Captain Smita Machhar with an axe. The plane plunged roughly 16,000 feet in half a minute.
Veteran Captain Machhar, with 17 years of flight‑deck experience, fought through serious injuries to reach the locked cockpit door. She forced it open, giving the flight crew the opportunity to restrain the attacker.
The two reserve pilots on the aircraft then assumed command, navigating the crippled jet to Tabuk in Saudi Arabia where it landed without further incident.
All 172 occupants – including four U.S. citizens and 27 children – survived. Authorities credit the captain’s seasoned judgement and unwavering resolve for turning a potential disaster into a successful emergency landing.
Her actions have drawn commendations from several governments, underscoring the critical role of experienced pilots in ensuring aviation safety.
