Flood Aftermath Leads to Nepal Travel Caution for Late September

Following the August 26 floods that left over 1,400 dead and more than 5,700 missing—including hundreds of tourists—the Nepal Tourism Board has released a travel advisory for the upcoming heavy rain period from September 25 to 27. The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology warned of intense precipitation across eastern Koshi, southern Madhesh, central Bagmati and western Sudurpashchim, with thunderstorm activity also expected in Karnali, Gandaki and Lumbini. NTB advises travelers heading to river valleys, high‑altitude areas or mountain passes to take extra precautions, as conditions can deteriorate quickly and snow may develop at higher elevations. The board recommends checking up‑to‑date weather forecasts, road and flight information, and staying away from zones with a high risk of landslides, steep drops, waterfalls or river crossings. Outdoor activities such as trekking and mountaineering should be postponed until conditions improve, and all visitors should heed guidance from local authorities and tour operators.
