First Shipment under India‑UK FTA Highlights New Market Access for Indian Engineers

The inaugural export under the India‑United Kingdom Free Trade Agreement was dispatched on 15 July from the Jaghadia GIDC in Bharuch, Gujarat. Breaks India Private Ltd’s Flometalic unit loaded 13,200 iron brake castings made for Renault, amounting to 25,656 kg and valued at €39,020.

The launch ceremony featured IAS officer Anupam Kumar, Director General of Foreign Trade, alongside Bharuch MPs Mansukhbhai Vasava, Sevantubhai Vasava and Ravjibhai Vasava. They underscored the shipment as a concrete step toward Prime Minister Modi’s goal of a "Developed India" and an expanded presence in high‑value global supply chains.

Anupam Kumar clarified that the FTA grants duty‑free entry for Indian textiles, garments, jewellery, engineering products, machine parts, pharma items and agricultural goods into the UK. This opens a wider, cost‑competitive channel for Indian manufacturers, allowing them to compete on price and quality in a mature market.

The UK deal is viewed as a model for the forthcoming India‑European Union agreement, scheduled for activation next year. Earlier trade accords with the UAE, Australia and Oman have already delivered early benefits, setting the stage for a broader network of free‑trade partnerships.
