Tensions flared in Bangladesh’s legal community after a female advocate was allegedly beaten and insulted by two male colleagues linked to the ruling BNP. The incident occurred at the Narayanganj District Judge Court, prompting a human chain protest organized by General Lawyers. The victim, Advocate Amina Akhter Shilpi, recounted that an argument over clearing hawkers escalated when Rafiqul Ahmed assaulted her and BNP official Abu Al Yusuf Khan Tipu struck her with his fist. She insisted she had no role in the vendor removal order, which came from Bar Association leaders. The controversy deepened when Tipu allegedly called female lawyers dancers in front of the media. Senior advocates like Shamsun Noor Bandhan urged the Bar leadership and BNP central committee to ensure an impartial probe and immediate disciplinary action. The demonstration reflects growing frustration over gender discrimination and violence within Bangladesh’s justice system. UNICEF has highlighted an alarming rise in such cases, calling for stronger institutional responses and an end to cultures of impunity. The protestors also pointed to recent statements by the Awami League, which described violence against women as a national governance crisis rather than just a gender issue.
