Fatal Shooting of Pakistan Air Force Captain Highlights Rising Attacks on Security Personnel

The death of Group Captain Asim Tariq of the Pakistan Air Force on Sunday has intensified worries over a wave of assaults targeting security forces across the country. The officer was shot near Shahid Chowk in Islamabad after he tried to stop a teenager from forcibly placing a woman into a car.

According to police, the assailant drew a pistol and fired at the captain as he intervened. The officer died on the scene and his body was later transferred to the PAF Hospital for formal procedures.

Law enforcement has detained a woman named Nimra for questioning, while the gunman and an alleged partner remain at large. The incident follows a recent ambush in Mohmand district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, that claimed the lives of two police officers, including an additional station house officer.

Officials have linked the spate of attacks to extremist groups described as “Fitna al‑Khawarij,” a term used for factions associated with the banned Tehrik‑e‑Taliban Pakistan. Police, district officials and rescue teams converged on the scene, launching a relief and investigation operation.

Analysts warn that the pattern of targeting uniformed personnel, especially in frontier provinces such as Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, could destabilize law‑and‑order efforts if not addressed swiftly.
