False Narrative of Indian National Detained for GPS Data Near Iranian Bases Spreads Online

Several online users shared a claim that an Indian citizen had been apprehended in Tehran for allegedly gathering GPS coordinates of sensitive Iranian military zones. The claim was illustrated with a purported photo of the detainee and a satellite view of a restricted area.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs, through its MEA Fact Check service, investigated the story and categorised it as misinformation. The fact‑check team noted that the same paragraph was posted by multiple accounts with only minor variations, a hallmark of copy‑paste misinformation. The presence of a page named “Pakistan Now” among the sources points to possible cross‑border amplification of the rumor.

The ministry warned the public to refrain from sharing such unverified content, noting that unfounded allegations of espionage can destabilise diplomatic discourse, particularly when discussions about Iran’s defence activities are already prevalent on social platforms.
