Experts Warn of Rapid H5N1 Spread Among New Zealand’s Wild Birds
Wellington authorities confirmed on July 16 that a seabird recovered from Petone Beach carried a novel H5N1 avian influenza strain. The finding, announced by senior veterinary officials, signals a high risk that the virus may become endemic in New Zealand within a short timeframe if it infiltrates wild bird populations. Chief Veterinary Officer Mary Van Andel stressed the difficulty of eliminating the pathogen once it takes hold in nature. Professor Diane Brighton of the University of Auckland warned that the country's geographic separation will not stop the virus’s advance, even though there is no current evidence of massive bird deaths or widespread infection among native species. Human cases are possible but extremely uncommon and do not affect food security. Virologist Professor Jemma Gioghen from Otago University explained that New Zealand has been preparing for such an incursion since the virus spread across Australia and other regions, underscoring the need for swift bird surveillance, genomic sequencing, and rigorous monitoring. The Department of Conservation has already begun vaccinating 300 individuals from five threatened bird species, including the kakapo and takahe. According to Massey University epidemiologist Naïjel French, a full‑scale outbreak could endanger small and already‑declining populations such as the fairy tern, potentially pushing them toward extinction.
