Experts Warn Pets of Possible Bird‑Flu Spread from Urban Foxes

A recent case in Adelaide's O'Sborne dunes has raised alarms about the transmission of H5 bird flu from wild foxes to household animals. The fox displayed neurological abnormalities before being captured and euthanised, prompting a suspicion of avian influenza infection.

Professor Richie emphasized that foxes often feed on dead or sick birds, making them vectors for the virus. Their habit of roaming backyards and slipping under fences puts them in close proximity to pets.

Authorities advise pet owners to restrict outdoor access for dogs, cats and chickens until the virus is definitively identified. This precaution mirrors earlier warnings issued after multiple bird‑flu detections across the continent.

The Invasive Species Council also warned that native mammals such as the Tasmanian devil and quoll could be at risk if they consume infected carcasses, adding another layer of concern for conservationists.
