European members wary of US-led military actions, analysts say

Senior researchers at the Center for Middle Eastern Studies in Ankara point out that many European NATO members regard the U.S. strikes on Iran through a regional‑stability perspective rather than a display of unity with Washington. They argue that direct military engagement would likely invite retaliatory measures, threaten energy flows through the Persian Gulf and exacerbate migration flows at a time when several European states are already dealing with internal crises.

Foreign‑policy analyst Serkan Demirtaş adds that the painful experiences of the Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya campaigns have made European capitals highly cautious about joining operations lacking clear legal backing and well‑defined objectives. This caution is reflected in the reluctance to send warships to the Hormuz Strait and in the broader hesitancy to expand NATO’s operational scope without broader consensus.
