EU Leaders Discuss Multilateral Cooperation and Climate Action at UN

On the eve of the UNGA 81, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen sat down with Secretary‑General António Guterres, accompanied by the President of the European Council and the EU’s High Representative. The meeting focused on strengthening multilateral mechanisms and advancing climate initiatives.

Both sides highlighted the necessity of a rules‑based global framework that can adapt to today’s geopolitical realities. The EU reiterated its pledge to back a restructured United Nations capable of delivering prompt and effective solutions to pressing problems such as the war in Ukraine, climate emergencies, and regional instability.

Von der Leyen thanked the Secretary‑General for his collaborative spirit throughout his term, noting joint achievements on climate finance, pandemic preparedness, and peace‑building efforts.

The UN General Assembly’s high‑level week, scheduled for September 22‑29, will gather heads of state and senior officials to debate peace, security, development, and disarmament. India’s representation will be headed by External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar.
