EU Leaders Condemn Israeli Attacks in Lebanon Amid Ceasefire Fears

A chorus of condemnation has risen from Europe over Israel’s aggressive military operations in Lebanon, with top officials decrying the strikes as disproportionate and a severe blow to ongoing ceasefire efforts. The attacks, which claimed hundreds of lives in a single night, have intensified concerns about the viability of the US-Iran mediated truce.

Italian PM Giorgia Meloni was unequivocal in her address to parliament, describing the Israeli moves as a ‘disrespect’ to the established two-week ceasefire rules. She painted a grim picture of the escalating crisis, stating it has reached a critical juncture where peace initiatives must be pursued with utmost determination despite the chaos.

Across the Channel, UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper dismissed the strikes as wholly inappropriate, advocating for Lebanon’s swift integration into ceasefire arrangements. Her remarks underscore Britain’s growing alarm at the potential unraveling of hard-won diplomatic gains.

EU’s top diplomat Kaja Kallas urged restraint on all fronts, calling on Iran-backed Hezbollah to disarm while critiquing Israel’s heavy-handed tactics. ‘Such massive destruction cannot be excused as self-defense,’ she posted on X, insisting the American-Iranian agreement apply fully to Lebanon. The Wednesday onslaught, she argued, makes it challenging to frame the operations within defensive bounds.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot reinforced this view, rejecting the bombings as intolerable and warning of their erosive effect on the temporary ceasefire. With European powers aligning against the escalation, urgent calls for de-escalation are growing louder, as stakeholders grapple with the path forward in this volatile conflict zone.
