EU Foreign Ministers Informal Talks: Jaishankar Joins in Cyprus

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar touched down in Cyprus on Wednesday, becoming the first Indian minister to join the European Union’s exclusive Gymnich retreat. The informal format allows candid exchanges on pressing global issues without formal conclusions, and New Delhi hopes its presence will reinforce the message that India is a vital partner in shaping Europe’s future security architecture. While transiting through Frankfurt, Jaishankar held a brief but substantive discussion with Ambassador Ajit Gupte on ways to upgrade the India-Germany strategic partnership. The embassy highlighted that the conversation covered defense-industrial collaboration, green technology, and people-to-people linkages. Over the next two days, Jaishankar will sit alongside his EU colleagues and fellow invitees from Saudi Arabia and Ukraine. Agenda items range from managing the fallout of the Ukraine war to coordinating responses to supply-chain disruptions and hybrid threats. A working dinner hosted by Cypriot Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos is expected to set a cooperative tone ahead of Thursday’s formal sessions at Limassol Port. The trip comes weeks after Prime Minister Modi and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen agreed in Gothenburg to accelerate negotiations on a comprehensive trade pact. Observers believe Jaishankar’s interventions in Cyprus will help iron out remaining differences and maintain political momentum toward an early conclusion of the deal.
