EU Must Prioritize Diplomacy Over Military in Ukraine Conflict, Says Slovakia's Leader

President Peter Pellegrini of Slovakia used his State of the Republic remarks on 16 September to argue that the European Union should shift its focus from a military‑centric approach to a diplomatic one, especially regarding the war in Ukraine. He said the five‑year confrontation has clearly shown that lasting peace can only be achieved through negotiation, not force.

While reaffirming Slovakia’s unwavering support for NATO and the EU, Pellegrini warned that the Union’s current operating model is lagging behind the fast‑changing global order. He pointed out that cooperation with traditional Atlantic allies is weakening and that the EU has not yet re‑examined its core priorities.

To restore credibility, the president called for enhanced internal security mechanisms, more coordinated external defence policies, and concerted action to bring down soaring energy costs. He also highlighted the importance of cultivating relationships with emerging economies such as India and China, which present valuable opportunities for Slovakia’s open market.

Pellegrini concluded that a renewed emphasis on diplomatic tools will not only help resolve the Ukrainian crisis but also strengthen the Union’s role as a promoter of global peace and stability.
