Ethiopia outreach expands India’s strategic partnership in the Horn of Africa
New Delhi, 11 October – In Addis Ababa, Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar met Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, delivering Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s greetings and congratulating him on his recent re‑election. A personal message from Modi was also handed over.
A wide‑ranging discussion with Ethiopian Foreign Minister Gedion Timochenko reaffirmed both countries’ commitment to expand cooperation in trade, investment, agriculture, renewable energy, health, education, skill development, defence, mining, artificial intelligence and digital public infrastructure. The talks also touched upon regional dynamics and common global concerns.
Jaishankar toured the National Palace Museum, the Science Museum and the Artificial Intelligence Institute, and laid a wreath at a monument in the Adwa Victory Museum. In a public lecture he highlighted India’s strategic partnership with Africa and the pivotal role of the Global South in shaping multilateral outcomes.
The minister announced a second edition of the Jaipur artificial limb camp, following the successful 2024 mission in Ethiopia’s Afar region that provided prosthetic limbs to about 450 patients.
India also proposed specialised training programmes for Ethiopian officials in forensic science, women and child development and media administration, aimed at strengthening human‑resource capabilities and institutional capacity.
Jaishankar chaired a regional conference of Indian ambassadors and high commissioners to Africa in Addis Ababa, where participants deliberated strategies to reinforce India’s partnership across the continent.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the Ethiopia visit accelerates the India‑Ethiopia strategic partnership and complements forthcoming high‑level exchanges – Prime Minister Modi’s slated December 2025 visit to Ethiopia and Prime Minister Abiy’s expected September 2026 visit to India.
