Ethiopia joins BRICS, India strengthens ties at Delhi summit

Ethiopia's recent accession to the BRICS bloc has added fresh momentum to its relationship with India. Prime Minister Modi, speaking after the bilateral session, noted that Ethiopia's participation would enrich the group's representation of Africa and the Global South.

Both governments agreed to coordinate closely on the 18th BRICS summit scheduled for September 12‑13 in New Delhi. Topics on the agenda include reform of global financial institutions, climate financing and collaborative research in health and education. The two sides also pledged to support each other’s candidatures in multilateral bodies and to elevate people‑to‑people linkages through scholarships, tourism promotion and cultural festivals.

The accord reflects a growing strategic convergence, as India seeks to deepen its outreach to emerging economies while Ethiopia aims to leverage BRICS membership for development financing and technology transfer.
