Escalation on Yemen's strategic mountain front kills dozens

In a 24‑hour window, fighting on Yemen's mountainous frontier claimed the lives of at least 44 combatants from both the government army and the Houthi movement. Senior officials said the Kabuh high‑ground area in Lahj province – a vital passage toward the Bab al‑Mandeb strait – was the focal point of the latest surge.

The army confirmed twelve of its own killed in the Kabuh sector, while a Houthi military source reported fifteen of its fighters, including a commander, fell in the same clashes. Simultaneously, in Taiz province, Houthi forces attempted multiple breakthroughs in the Al‑Kadha and Al‑Wajiyah districts, leading to six army deaths and eleven rebel fatalities.

The intensified engagement follows the Houthis' recent gains along Yemen's Red Sea coast, notably the capture of Mokha and the occupation of Mayyun island, which have heightened the strategic importance of the mountain routes linking the interior to the sea.

Both combatants continue to reinforce their positions with fresh troops and weapons, indicating that the battle for control of these elevations is far from resolved.
