Election Update: Indian-American Wins and Historical Governor Races

Vote counts are still rolling in across the United States, but early declarations point to decisive shifts in both congressional districts and executive offices. Three Indian-American Democrats have successfully won their respective contests, signaling a notable surge in South Asian political representation.

In Maryland, Democratic Governor Wes Moore held off Republican challenger Dan Cox, preserving the position of Indian-American Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller. On the federal level, Virginia’s 10th district returned Suhas Subramanyam to Congress. He defeated Dave Beckwith and Ahsan Malik to secure his seat. Subramanyam, who broke ground in 2024 as the state’s first Indian-American representative, pledged to concentrate his legislative efforts on lowering living expenses, repairing healthcare cuts, safeguarding AI and data center infrastructure, and ensuring federal employee welfare. He remarked that the political campaigning has concluded and his energy is now directed toward delivering tangible policy changes in Washington.

Florida’s 22nd district saw Piya Dandia defeat Republican Casey Asher. A former educator and White House fellow, Dandia campaigned heavily on economic mobility, affordable housing, and education. Her election marks a milestone as the first Indian-American woman to represent the Sunshine State in Congress.

Gubernatorial battles produced both tight races and historic victories. In Ohio, Democrat Amy Acton is currently ahead of Republican Vivek Ramaswamy. With reporting at 46 percent, Acton sits at 54.3 percent against Ramaswamy’s 42.8 percent. Ramaswamy, a biotech entrepreneur and Donald Trump ally seeking to replace term-limited Governor Mike DeWine, continues his push despite the current deficit.

Other governor races delivered unambiguous outcomes. Republican Byron Donalds defeated Democrat David Jolly in Florida to replace term-limited Ron DeSantis. In Georgia, Democrat Keshia Lance Bottoms defeated Rick Jackson, securing a historic win as the first Black woman to become a state governor and snapping over two decades of Republican dominance.

Indian-American candidates also established early command in state-level contests. In North Carolina’s 4th congressional district, incumbent Democrat Rep. Valérie Foushee is projected to defeat Republican Mahesh Gunnoor. In Pennsylvania’s 3rd district, Democrat Arvind Venkat leads Libby Blackburn. In Illinois State Senate District 26, Democratic Rep. Nabila Syed holds an advantage over Republican Darby Hills. Meanwhile, Georgia’s House District 97 has Democrat Jyoti Singh leading Republican Yasmin Moghazy with 10,176 votes to 4,226.

At the national level, Democrats picked up critical seats. Chris Pappas won a New Hampshire Senate seat, John Ossoff secured reelection in Georgia, and former North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper defeated Michael Wattley to capture a competitive Senate seat.
