Economic Strain and Leadership Void Fuel Lack of Protests in Pakistan

New Delhi, Sept 18 – Pakistan is witnessing a relentless rise in the price of gasoline, diesel, electricity and gas. The surge comes at a time when inflation has already squeezed household budgets, leaving many families grappling with higher daily expenses.

Data shows that roughly half of Pakistan’s citizens live under the poverty line. The direct impact of fuel price hikes is felt in transport costs, which then elevate the price of food and other necessities, disproportionately affecting low‑ and middle‑income households.

Despite these hardships, large‑scale public protests have been scarce. Experts attribute the silence to a fragmented political environment, weak opposition mobilisation, and an absence of unified leadership capable of channeling public anger into organized action.

The situation contrasts with past periods in Pakistan’s history when even small increases in essential commodity prices sparked widespread demonstrations.

Young people, who constitute a significant share of the population, are often seen as potential drivers of change. However, prevailing economic uncertainty and a lack of organized political vehicles have limited their ability to rally en masse.

If systemic economic and institutional challenges remain unresolved, the continued pressure on household budgets could intensify public discontent and erode confidence in the state’s capacity to deliver stability.
