Ebola surge in Congo: 600+ deaths as health system strains

The Democratic Republic of Congo’s health ministry reports that the Ebola outbreak has claimed over 600 lives, with a total of 1,759 confirmed infections. The disease, which first emerged in the country on May 15, has now spread to three provinces—Ituri, North Kivu and South Kivu—affecting 37 health zones. Current figures show 750 patients in isolation or hospital care, while 94 percent of Ebola treatment beds are filled. The situation is compounded by a series of operational hurdles: community resistance to post‑mortem sampling, a shortage of therapeutic supplies, weak contact‑tracing mechanisms, and limited access to conflict‑affected zones. International partners and the World Health Organization have repeatedly cautioned that ongoing insecurity, cross‑border movement and incomplete contact tracing could exacerbate the outbreak, which the WHO has declared a public health emergency of international concern. Ebola, a rare yet highly lethal disease, spreads from wildlife reservoirs such as fruit bats to humans, and is transmitted via direct contact with the fluids of infected individuals. Symptoms appear 2 to 21 days after exposure and include sudden fever, severe headache, muscle aches, vomiting, diarrhea and, in severe cases, uncontrolled bleeding. No proven vaccine or treatment exists for the Burundibugyo strain, though research continues. The epidemic unfolds in a region already beset by humanitarian crises, dense populations and armed conflict, making containment efforts especially challenging.
