The ego, in his view, is a computational error – the brain’s habit of assigning ownership (“my thought, my body”) to a narrative that does not exist. Suffering, he said, is not located in any organ; it emerges when the inner voice declares loneliness or regret at night, a phenomenon the brain constructs rather than experiences directly.

Fleming responded by noting that experimental data often show a mismatch between confidence and actual performance, especially when prefrontal circuits generate illusory self‑models. He added that the brain does not house a separate dashboard; the same hardware produces both clear and vague metacognitive signals, differing only in their level of abstraction.

The conversation moved to practical advice. Both speakers emphasized the need for an external, neutral mirror – a trusted mentor, a sincere friend, or a rigorous text – to test the authenticity of one’s internal narrative. They warned that without such a mirror, the ego’s computational error can go unchecked, leading to distorted self‑judgments.

Questions from the audience addressed heart‑brain coupling, AI consciousness, and the “hard problem” of subjective experience. Fleming suggested that the heart’s rhythmic phases influence perceptual sensitivity, while the hard problem may be more an ethical query than a purely scientific puzzle.
